If you've reached the limits of a point-and-shoot digital camera, step up to the 6.1 MP Nikon D70. While this is certainly more camera than a hack like myself really needs, I was continually bumping up against the limitations of my beloved Sony F-717, so I sold it and all my other gear to buy the D70, and I couldn't be happier. Ah, the rare satisfaction of a product that exceeds your expectations.
As a true SLR, the D70 has the ability to change lenses, just like your favorite 35mm camera. It shoots 3 fps, and has excellent picture quality at 800 ISO, so it's a better choice than most for sports and action. The flash sync speed is an impressive 1/500, and it has wireless compatability with Nikon Speedlight flashes. (If all of this sounds like gibberish, then you should check out this link.)
